Frequently asked

Who regulates insurance in North America?

In the United States insurance is regulated by the states: each has an insurance department (the Texas Department of Insurance, the New York DFS, the California DOI and so on) coordinated through the NAIC, with the Federal Insurance Office at the Treasury monitoring, and captives are licensed by their domicile state, led by Vermont. Canada’s federally incorporated insurers answer to OSFI and provincially incorporated ones to the AMF in Québec, FSRA in Ontario, BCFSA and the other provincial regulators. Mexico’s CNSF supervises insurers and surety companies, and the Bermuda Monetary Authority licenses Bermuda’s commercial reinsurers and captives. For this release Canada was reconciled against the OSFI register, Mexico against the AMIS directory and CNSF padrón, the United States against the Texas licence exports and the Vermont captive register, and Bermuda against ABIR membership; the Central American and Caribbean rows are compiled from market knowledge.

How do I check whether an insurer is licensed?

Open the regulator website linked in the table and look for its register of licensed entities, usually published annually in a gazette or on a "licensed companies" page. This directory links every insurer to its regulator and records which register it was checked against.

How often are the registers updated?

Most supervisors publish a full list once a year and announce licence grants or revocations in between. Insurers Global re-verifies against the published register and records the date on each country page.
